2020 has brought with it a lot of change and for the workplace a lot of that change is good. More of us are working from home meaning we have no work commute and a better work life balance. But the majority of us are looking forward to a time where we can be back in the office full time, interacting with out colleagues and making good use of office facilities. Rapid changes in working culture spark innovation in office design and the creation of better working environments and cultures.

Far from marking 2020 the end of the office, it will drive the creation of better offices. These will take more sophisticated approaches to the demands of modern working life, focussing on wellbeing, productivity, collaboration and choice. They will fit into a broader working ecosystem of local offices, homes, cafes, coworking space and everywhere else in between. These times may be unprecedented, but we know how to respond.

Wellbeing in the office

People work better in a space designed to promote productivity and minimise distractions. Prevent fatigue and headaches with good lighting, stimulate brain function with inspiring colours and encourage employees to take walks with pictures of nature. The business owner needs to encourage creativity with collaboration spaces – design an area of the office with seating and tables, where people can gather and throw around ideas. In a 2021 vaccinated workplace this is achievable and something workers will crave after more than a year of isolation.

Co working

People thrive in coworking spaces, unlike a traditional office, coworking spaces consist of members who work for a range of different companies, ventures, and projects. Because there is little direct competition or internal politics, they do not feel they have to put on a work persona to fit in. Staff are more likely to soak in the creative flow they are surrounded in. Get a taste for how others operate, take the best bits, and apply it to your workday.

Collaborative Space

There are so many benefits to collaborative workspaces and we personally can’t wait till this becomes safe and normal again. Collaborative workspaces mean nothing gets missed, everyone on the team is aware of the role they each play in the business and project issues can get identified much quicker therefore deadlines and scope creep are rarely an issue. A community will emerge from your workplace as everyone is more in tune with the company’s common goals.

Workplace design will change, improve and will be different going forward. We are already hard at work on a number of projects taking place in 2021 with a new design focus on what the post Covid-19 workplace will look like!
